How Digital Nomads Actually Make Money Online

Living in a different country, working online, café hopping, making new friends… this is a regular life for a Digital Nomad. Sounds dreamy, doesn’t it? But where do you start and how do you make consistent money?

As Digital Nomad work becomes more and more common, there are tons of opportunities to make money online. This could be anything from freelance work, to selling digital products, to working remote for an established company, and everything in between.

Below, we’ve listed five ways for you to make money online.

Work Online for an Establised Corporation

The pandemic changed the way of online working. Corporations, now more than ever, are allowing people to work remotely, from their home office or from a remote location. The only thing required is some stable wifi. If you aren’t entrepreneurial, this is the best option for you.

The best way to find remote work is to head over to Indeed or LinkedIn and sort by location “Remote”. Additionally, researching companies that are remote first and reviewing what open positions they have is a great way to find remote positions.

Pro-tip: If you currently work for a company and want to become a Digital Nomad, sit down and have a chat with your employer about becoming remote. Make sure to have a plan on how you will successfully make it work.

Become a Virtual Assistant Freelancer

Definition of a Virtual Assistant: a self-employed entrepreneur that provides different kinds of services such as administrative, technical, social media management, design, creative work, and more.

It’s smart to choose a specialty and go from there, but while you’re trying to choose a specialty, it’s not a bad thing to try out different kinds of specialties. Give Instagram management a shot, or try out copywriting, maybe even design work. Find what you love, and learn everything you can about it.

Pro-tip: If you specialize, rather than become a General Virtual Assistant, you can charge more to clients. You don’t have to charge hourly, you can create project pricing, and you can charge for your expertise.

Sell Digital Products

There are many different kinds of digital products you can sell. First, you could create and sell a course. If you have a certain skill or certain expertise, you can educate others on it. Create an outline, record the modules, and start marketing it.

Or, if you have a creative side, you can create digital designs and sell them. This could be anything from stickers, to designs for clothing, to posters or printables. All you have to do is create them once and they become an evergreen product. You can sell them at any time and they can simply download the product.

Lastly, you could create templates. For example, Google Sheets or Excel templates. This could be income statements, habit trackers, invoices, and so on. Or, if you’re good with website design, you could create website templates for different kinds of platforms and sell them.

Pro-tip: Using Etsy to get going is a perfect way to start selling your digital products. Etsy is not just for handmade items, but also templates and digital designs. For courses, you’ll have to find a course platform to upload the videos and market.

Become an Online English Teacher

This industry is bigger than you think, there are so many different teaching and tutoring opportunities out there. Most require a bachelors degree and English certification, but you don’t need anything specific related to teaching. You must be patient, friendly, and punctual though.

You usually cover things like grammar, speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Due to being online, you might have to get creative, but if you love teaching, and you have the patience, this is the online gig for you.

Pro-tip: If you don’t want to freelance tutor, look into being on a online language tutoring platform. This is one of the easiest ways to teach English online and they will provide all materials and lesson plans. The downside is that this is usually paid hourly, rather than by student.

Invest in Short Term Rentals

Now this one requires a bit of upfront cost, but can be so worth it in the end. There are two ways to do this. The first one is to purchase property, style and furnish it, and then start renting it on a short term rental platform, like Airbnb. This way is obviously very out of reach for some, it’s hard to buy a house, especially numerous houses.

The second option is to find a monthly rental that allows for you to sublease. This way, you only have to worry about furnishing it and putting it on Airbnb. You can manage many properties this way and eventually, you’ll have a really good amount of income coming in.

Pro-tip: Hire a manager for your Airbnb properties so it becomes even more passive. At first, you can manage this by yourself, but as you travel more and more, you’ll need someone to answer messages and manage any issues.

These are just five ways to make money as a Digital Nomad, there are so many different ways. Just doing some online research and learning different skills will make you very valuable in the online world.

Take your chance, dive in, and get working. You’re worth it.
